The goal

Turning industrial data into improvement and innovation

Aquaculture companies generate gigabytes of valuable data every day. The amount or variety of data is not what limits digital improvement. The main challenge is: who will turn data into better decisions and new value?

Lingalaks is one of the pioneers in Norwegian and global aquaculture, founded in 1978 and still family-owned. They were among the first to use algae oil as a more sustainable feed ingredient, and spearheaded the "Stadion Basin" closed containment concept. Lingalaks has used Clarify since 2019 as a core part of its data infrastructure.

The challenge

Making data streams available, understandable and useful for better decisions and more innovation

Data is spread across systems and formats, and bringing it together demands deep technical expertise. For most companies and R&D personnel the task is too complex and time-consuming, so data goes to waste and research efforts that could benefit the whole industry are stranded.

Companies typically work around this with ad-hoc, one-off integrations. These make it hard for data owners to keep track of who has access to what, and can create security vulnerabilities. Giving selected stakeholders access to selected sources for a selected period is not trivial, and few companies have the infrastructure in place.

The solution

Combining modern technology with a drive to improve

Lingalaks has invested in high-tech equipment on all of their farms: environmental sensors, industrial control systems, cameras and hydroacoustic systems.

1. Collect all the data. The Clarify team, in-house experts and the system providers digitalized every farm. Real-time data streams to Clarify, giving one point of easy and secure access to high-resolution time-series data.
2. Make data easily available for domain experts, alone and together. On web and mobile, people search, organize, visualize and explore data. Comments and discussions build annotated data sets that improve both human decisions and machine learning.
3. Lower the threshold for data-driven innovation. Through the Clarify API, Lingalaks gives other companies secure access to selected data sources. Software startup Manolin extracts data from the API so they can focus on building tools for farmers, not on managing integrations. Together with Eide Fjordbruk and Bolaks, Lingalaks also shares live operational data with Master students at NTNU.
