Salmon Evolution is a pioneer in land based fish farming, using a hybrid flow-through system to farm salmon on land at commercial scale. The technology minimises operational and biological risk and ensures optimal growth conditions. Phase 1 at Indre Harøy is in full production, with building ongoing to triple capacity.

Utilising data and collaborating efficiently across functional teams is a key focus. Live, high quality data is the common thread that brings teams together to find problems to solve and better ways of operating.

The challenge

More control = more to control

Every 4 hours fresh seawater is introduced into the facility, while 65% is reused to balance water quality, energy usage, costs and operational risk. All intake water is filtered and treated, and every tank is a single biosecure space.

The facility runs state of the art industrial control systems. But more control and hardware bring new challenges: maintenance, improving control loops, avoiding downtime and controlling energy usage, on top of fish growth and welfare. Streaming tens of thousands of sensors in full resolution in realtime quickly overwhelms both humans and software.

The collaboration started early 2022 with a pilot on a small subset of data and facility. Testing in practice with real world data built the confidence to scale to the whole production.
